CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Social medial have been defined by various researchers. According to Boyd and Ellison (2007), social medial is defined as computer mediated technology that allow the creating and sharing of information ideal. Careers, interest and other of expression via communities and networks. Also, AOberst. (2010) asserted that social networks sites are web based services that allow individuals to construct a public or semi public profile within a bounded system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connections, view and traverse their list of connections and those made by other that are found in group on these sites.

Heidicohen (2016) in his researcher found out that the average persons swipes, their smart phone about 2,617 times a day, making a grand total of one million times a year. Also, globally as reported by internet world statistics is (2016). The number of active users of most popular social media site as of September 2016 is stated as follows. Facebook: 1,712, 000.000 users; Whats APP: 1,000,000,000 facebook messenger; 1,000,000,000 user QQ: 899,000 000, users; we chat: 806,000,000 users ozone: 652,000,000 user; Tumble: 555,000,000 users; Instagram: users; Twitter: 313,000,000 users; Badoo, 300,000,000 users; Skype: 3000, 000,000 users; Snapchat: 200,000 users; Viber 249,000 users; line: 218,000,000 users;

Most used social network in Nigeria as of (2015) is facebook with the usage of about 93. 72% even in the area of educational system such a chemistry. Twitter ranks second with 5.29% interest ranks, third with 0.42% Tumbs ranks fourth with 0.0% and the remained social network hold 0.37% using internet. The number of user is increasing every year with highest number of students on such social networking sites.

As per the survey contribution by few research centre as reported by Abhishek (2015) 72 percent of high school and 78, percent of college students spend time on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc These number indicate how much the students community is involved in this virtual world of social network. Most of this research by Sheldon (2008), Lewis (2008), Karpinski & Durber stern (2007), Owusu and Agatha, (2016), conducted on students use of the social media sites and its effect on academic performance focused on students in the developed world.

Ablishek (2015) asserted many reasons that explain why students love to spend time socializing. Firstly, social networks provide them the freedom to do whatever they want to up-load what they want and talk to whom they want. They like to make new friends and comment on the lives of different people students can create other document identifies that the real world does not allow. The freedom it gives them to act just sitting in front of a computer enthralls them, and they then demand for more freedom. Never before was it been so easy for young mind to create a digital of their action through such a spontaneous medium

Social media have two sides of a coin, bring with it both the negative and positive sides even in the aspect of education. It help people to be better informed enlightened and keeping a breast with world development. A number of studies have been conducted to find out the impact of social media an academic performance of secondary schools student. Jeffrey and Musah (2015) reported a high addiction rate among students in the usage of social media networks which lead to poor grammer and spelling, late submission of assignment, and poor academic performance. Also, Banquil, Chuna, leano, Rivero, Bruce, and Dianalan et al (2009), found a continuing drop of grade among students who use the social networking sites. This was supported by Kirschner and Karpinski (2010), who find out a significant negative relationship between facebook use and academic performance. They concluded that students who use facebook spend few hours per week studying on an average than facebook non user and this resulted in lower mean grade point average (GPA) study by Junco (2012) indicated that time spent on facebook was strongly and significantly negatively correlated with over all GPA. Schill (2011) stated that the media sites encourage negative behaviours for teen students such as procrastination (catching up with friends), and they are more likely to drink and drug. However, everyday many students are spending hours immersed in social media such as facebooking, my space, world of ware craft. At first glance this may seen like waste of time, however, it also help students to develop important knowledge and social skill and be active citizens who create and share content. At present, whether social media is favorable or unfavorable, many students utilize these sites on a daily basis. As social media sites continue to grow in popularity, it is our belief that technology is a vital part of today’s student success equation. Many researcher have been diving into a considerable amount of research on how social media influenced students rotation at college. Many parents are worried that their college students are spending too much time on facebook and other social media sites and not enough time studying. Therefore our research ascertains the relationship between the social media and students study efficiency.

Social networks provide them the freedoms to do whatever want to upload what they want and talk to whom they want the like to make new friend and comment on the lives of difference people students can create other identities that the real work ideal not allow the freedom it gives them to act just by sitting in front of a computer enthralls them and they then demand form are freedom. Never before has it been so easy for young mind to create a digital image of their action through such as a spontaneous medium.

Many psychologist are worried about the identify crisis that our present generation may face today. The lives of people, especially students, are largely influenced by what is posted by other people on their profiles. The habits that students learn are decided more by what their friends to and less by the teaching of parents or professors. Getting too involved bad habits. Students prefer to chart with friends for hours and this lead to a waste of time that could have been used for studying, playing or learning new skills. It is often said that a long-term friendship is developed when people meet each spend time and share their experiences. But this virtual way of communicate with each other sites does not lead to natural, friendly experiences and hence cannot produce a healthy relationship with those friends. Also, those relationships tend to terminate easily due to a lack of person contact.

Statement of Problem

To address issue of the effectiveness of using social networking, the first question raised in this study is for what purpose is the student utilizing social networking sites are on this topic we will start to reveal social networking sites as simply part of how students interact with each other with no apparent impact on grader. Thus, the objectives of this research is to explore the advantages and disadvantages of students use of social networking for study. The main purpose of this research is to expand on previous research explore to relation between the effect of social networking and study students academic lives.

Today’s world is a global village. Everyone is connected to one another in this vast network generated by the internet. In the past, the communicating and free sharing of thoughts among people were restricted by long distance nationality and religions. But now, those barriers cannot stop the flow of information and knowledge. The new world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts

However, there are controversial issues about the problems associated with social networks in the society. Concern have been raised about possible links between heavy social media use and depression, cyber buildings online harassment and “trolling” Specifically, on education media network had great impact on the lives of the youths. According to Ablushek (2015). The most important thing in a students life are studying, learning good habits and gaining knowledge to become a person with moral character. But today as we see in various studies, this optimal learning process is seriously jeopardized by students becoming entrapped by the plays of social networking. Students has exchange their study times with social networks websites. Parents, teachers and all Stakeholders on education are worried about low performance of students at the Senior School Certificate Examination. Jeffrey and Musah (2015), Juzco (2012) opined that actively and frequency participating in social networks can negatively affect students grades or helper their journey to their future careers.
